About Us

History

In 1869, four years after Sherman’s troops had stormed through Georgia and the Carolinas, Edwin W. Seibels opened a small sales operation in the heart of Columbia’s fire-ravaged business district. That small operation gave birth to The Seibels Bruce Group of today, the oldest business enterprise still operating within the city of Columbia, South Carolina.

The Seibels Bruce Group started modestly as E. W. Seibels & Company which represented “some of the best FIRE and LIFE INSURANCE COMPANIES in the US”, and has grown into a prominent insurance group.

The Company writes commercial insurance on a retained-risk basis through its subsidiary, Catawba Insurance Company, in the states of South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, and Kentucky. Seibels also writes personal lines insurance in South Carolina through Catawba.

In North Carolina, our subsidiary Universal Insurance Company, writes personal lines nonstandard automobile and commercial lines insurance on a retained-risk basis. Universal also writes commercial and personal automobile liability insurance placed through the North Carolina Reinsurance Facility.
